Grow Your Own..Hair?

So you may remember some weeks ago I blogged about Alpecin, a caffeine shampoo available at the drugstore that claims to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. For those unfamiliar with my current situation I am suffering post-natal shedding and losing a considerable amount of hair with every wash leaving me with almost bald temples. I will say that the Alpecin improved the situation, - you can see my 'before' shots here and my current ones lower down this post - but it's target market is men and I found the formula much too drying on the ends of my hair, a problem I doubt men worry about. So.. when I was contacted to review the LA Science Anti-Hair Loss System I was dubious. The thing that really swung it for me was that the directions state that no additional conditioner is required as the formula has conditioning agents.. very much the opposite of the Alpecin so I thought, why not?

The shampoo itself is much thicker than I'd expected and so I took it at it's word and didn't condition. I rubbed it in to my scalp for 2 or 3 minutes and then left it on my hair for a further 10, it doesn't state that this is necessary but I can't see that it would hurt. After towel drying I applied the serum to my temples and a little over the rest of my scalp and went to brush it through. Unfortunately my hair is very tangly so although my hair may not need the moisture a conditioner provides I definitely need one to get a brush through it so I did have to apply a generous helping of Macadamia Oil through the ends in order to de-tangle the lengths but I have to say after blasting it with the hairdryer my hair looked and felt thicker and fuller after only one application. I'm not yet sure how/if conditioning will alter the effects but I am very interested to see the results in a few weeks time.

Alpecin did do something and for the money it's impressive but after taking so long to nuture my hair back to almost full health I'm not going to ruin it now by using a shampoo that will strip it of every drop of oil it's ever produced. I would recommend it as an occasional clarifying shampoo or for those with very greasy hair but for the rest of us girls it's just not going to work I'm afraid. The LA Science already shows more potential and althought it's a pricier treatment hair loss can be really traumatic and if it works I know I'd pay whatever the cost. Saying that the shampoo is actually pretty reasonable at £15.29 for 250 ml, it's the serum at a whopping £30.59 for 50ml that's the kicker but rest assured I will be back to tell you whether it's worth all those hard earned pennies!

Have you suffered with hair loss? Permanent or not it's never nice so if you've found a miracle cure or just something that you feel is working/has worked leave a comment and let us know.

Alpecin - Shampoo To Grow Your Hair?

Given my ever present ambition for long, lustrous locks you'd be forgiven for thinking this was another gimmick I was trialling in an attempt to boost hair growth and you wouldn't be entirely wrong. While I am very interested to see whether it effects the speed of growth I'm more concerned about the bald patches I've been left with post pregnancy...

Unfortunately I didn't have my DSLR to hand when I took these so they're not as clear as they could be but you get the idea. I'm sure there'll be some that say they're not bad but they're the only visible symptom.. my hair is falling out all over and it seems to be getting worse. When I wash it, when i brush it, even when I run my fingers through it I'm shedding hair left right and centre. I've tried not to use heat at all so I put my hair up and when I take it out the hair band is covered. I know this is normal, during pregnancy your body behaves in strange ways and most women will retain hair they'd usually shed and within 6 months after birth they lose all that hair. I know this because it happened the first time so I'm not overly concerned but if there's anything I can do to slow or halt the process I'm going to try it. So from today Alpecin will be my shampoo of choice and I will report back with my results. I'm really hoping it has extra effects and I've found a drugstore miracle for you all but only time will tell.

I've used it a couple of times already and I can tell you it tingles and feels like it's doing something. The spiel claims it keeps the hair in a suspended growth state for 24hrs and recommends you use it every day but it's primarily aimed at men and while they may not worry about dry ends we women do and this is anything but moisturising. I would probably work really well as a clarifying cleanser as it strips all the oil from my hair but like I said.. I'll give it a good run and let you know how I find it!

Available at Boots.com - link - for £5.35

Have any of you tried Alpecin? They have a large range of products which I may go on to try and I'll tell you a little more about in my follow up post but I'd be interested to hear from you if you've already tried anything or have any other hair loss remedies.

I'm Having a Baby..

Unless this is the first post of mine you've ever read you're probably already aware I am due to give birth soon. The beauty of an elective C-Section is that I have been able to plan for my absence. I've scheduled about a weeks worth of posts to keep you occupied, some of which are from some lovely guest bloggers and some are my own. Either way I wanted to make you aware that the posts that are mine are not my usual typed-on-the-day posts so they will not reflect my post-baby mood (if you're with me)

Again..  I'd expect you'd already know this but I have a separate baby blog which chronicles everything from our struggles to conceive the little one all the way up to his imminent arrival and I will continue to blog there about his progress and all Mummy related topics I deem unsuitable for my beauty blog.
All being well I will be posting his first baby picture there tomorrow so check back to see it or better still go and follow/subscribe to make sure you don't miss it!

I love blogging, it's my addiction so I will not be gone for long but while I'm not blogging here and while I'm not uploading my regular videos to missbudgetbeauty on YouTube I will be blogging at missbudgetbaby and uploading hospital and new baby vlogs to mekj1986 on YouTube (my second channel) So if you do miss me terribly you will find me there.

For now I'll leave you with my Baby Break video. I'd like to thank everyone who's wished us luck, the comments on that video were overwhelming. I appreciate every single one and in my nervous moments they've really helped keep me calm.

Soap & Glory - The Righteous Butter

This stuff truly is Righteous! It was the gateway Soap & Glory product for me. I was sent it by their PR, I'd never tried anything from S&G before and since then I've spent a FORTUNE chasing that divine scent  up and down the aisles of Boots. It's just this week run out and it's top on my weekend shopping list to be replaced. I received this at the time I was considering purchasing Mama Mio's tummy rub and I'm so glad I didn't waste my money now. I did a post about it on my baby blog you can see here

It's a luxurious, thick formula that you can rub for long enough to get a bit of massage action in before it absorbs. The true test for me is always how moisturised I feel the following day and this is great, not only does this leave you feeling totally hydrated but the S&G signature scent lingers on you (and your bedding) all day. I love waking up to that smell... anyone else? This is also available in a pump action bottle as a lotion which does tempt me but I don't know how it could be better than this version. The only thing that appeals is it could be a lot quicker and easier to use which will be valuable once bubba does arrive and I have less time to treat my tired skin. Perhaps I'll try that out next.

Have you tried the butter or the lotion?
I don't know if the thickness makes a difference to how well they last but i think I'm going to have to try the lotion now I've seen the difference in volume.

Weleda Regenerating Body Oil

I got thisa few months ago in my Glossybox and have just used it all up. I must say I wasn't expecting much but it really went a long way. It's kind of herbal in scent which I wasn't uber keen on but it left me feeling moisturised for longer than your average baby oil or equivalent. Being pregnant I've become a touch obsessed with all things oil and so this came at just the right time for me to enjoy it. It directs you to use it on wet skin to lock in that extra moisture and I think that's why it lasted me so long.. it was almost diluted. It claims to promote the renewal of ageing or tired skin to leave it more elastic, smooth and supple. Overall It's a nice product, I didn't see any lasting difference in my skin or any major improvements so I'm still of the belief that a body oil is a body oil wherever it may be from but if you have particularly dry skin and a larger budget than I then I would recommend it as it does hold moisture that bit longer.

You can buy this from Weleda.co.uk here for £19.95
A few of you have asked recently where my pregnancy blog went... well I changed the name. I figured as he's soon to be here and no longer a bump "missbbsbabybump" wasn't really going to cut it much longer. I changed it to missbudgetbaby but am very much open to other suggestions as I'm not 100% happy with that one.

Outift Month #28

*What I'm Wearing*

You may have noticed I pretty much live in my maternity leggings. I don't know what I'd have done without them... they are the ultimate in pregnancy comfort! I actually bought them at the same time as I bought this shirt and together they are practically pyjamas! This is by far my most comfortable outfit. I only wish the shirt didn't crease so terribly but then I guess it wouldn't be as lovely if it wasn't so cottony soft.
I'm also love love loving my new red bag... total bargain, just big enough for everything I need and still beautifully structured so it looks smart even when empty.

Shirt - Topshop Maternity
Leggings - Topshop Maternity
Pumps - Primark
Bag - H&M
Nameplate Necklace - eBay

One thing I had to mention in todays post is this lovely package I received.
A lovely twitter follower, Charlotte (find her here) responded to my plea a few weeks ago for a coconutty perfume after I developed a small obsession for the scent. Many people came back to me with suggestions but the uber generous Charlotte offered me a spare bottle of her recommended Tahitian Holiday that she had but didn't think she'd use. By no means am I encouraging people to send me things but I had to give her a mention as it was a lovely gesture. She even sent a note... how sweet?
I really like the perfume, I am wearing it today and can report it's very long lasting as I have worn it all day and at 10pm as I type whch I never can usually so I'm really impressed. Thank you Charlotte!!!

Outfit Month #24 and Meet Remy...

Not much in the way of outfit pictures today but I make up for it with others (read on)

*What I'm Wearing*
Maxi Dress - I just bought this from eBay for a bargainous £3 it is from Warehouse Definitions Collection and I know I will get tons of wear out of it, it's so comfy which is fab right now. Trouble is it's so thin you can see every lump and bump which is not so fab when I have an extreme belly button going on.
Cardigan - New Look
Bag- Ted Baker
FlipFlops - Primark
Name Necklace - Another eBay bargain
Nails - Models Own Beths Blue

We went to my parents house today, that's normally a Sunday activity but we didn't have a lot going on. Because I've been working part-time in my last month at work and Lee has been off on Garden Leave we've had a lot of time during the week to do the stuff that's normally saved for the weekend so when Saturday comes we find ourselves at a bit of a loose end. Anywho.. We thought we'd have an extra Grandma visit this week. I took along my camera and got some pretty cute pictures of one of the (two) dogs I thought I would share.

Meet Remy

Remy is a Border/Lakeland Terrier Cross who loves to be the centre of attention and  is jealous by nature. He's very feminine as dogs go and should probably have been born a poodle or a lapdog. He would absolutely be carried around in a purse if you could find one big enough and he will no doubt be the one dressed as a baby and pushed around in Milo's pram when he arrives.
He will sit with anyone that will stroke him and can often be found courting prospective owners as back up in case he was ever to find himself without a home.
We've (my parents) had Remy since I was 15 (that makes him 10) and he's a fully fledged member of the family, he thinks he's people and will sleep in the bed, under the covers, head on the pillow if allowed to do so... which he sometimes is.
Tomorrow I will be back with some pictures of Spike, my first and favourite dog (shh! don't tell Remy)

Who are your furry friends?

Outfit Month #15

I look massive today but I feel surprisingly slight given that I have 8 weeks to go. I don't feel pregnant enough! Just another 2 weeks at work and then I have a little rest at home before baby arrives... and boy am I looking forward to it. My work isn't too taxing right now.. I'm kind of phasing out but it can still be pretty stressful at times and I am not dealing with stress well. By far the worst pregnancy symptom is breathlessness and whenever I concentrate on anything I hold my breath which as you can imagine.. makes everything worse! Anywho... on to my outfit...

Cardigan : Zara
Vest : H&M
Maxi Skirt : Primark

For my makeup today check out the quick video below...

Bump Shot

One last note... the new H&M stuff is online today,
LOVE IT!!!! Go check it out... I am so in to H&M right now.

Outfit Month #5

I think I'm doing pretty well keeping up with this whole "outfit month" so far. It's so much easier uploading from my phone if it's everyday commitment.
Today what I am wearing is my new chunky sweater from Primark, Topshop maternity leggings and Faith boots (as you can see from my awesome pose)
Today was my first walk TO work (I usually only have to walk home) so I needed the RedBull.. Don't judge me!
Very neutral makeup today, ABC gum from Urban Decay and Wedge from Mac on my eyes, Peaches blush from Mac and bare lips. I straightened my hair this morning for the first time in ages and I'm gonna have to review what I used on it 'cause it still feels fantastic.
It was also Ella's first day back at school, for those wondering she was itching to get back and had what she called "the best day ever" which is always nice to hear. We're on our way home from Meadowhall (again) now having stocked up on some new schoolwear and taken back some not so flattering maternity jeans to H&M. I did receive a parcel from H&M today as it happens so I'll probably be wearing what I bought tomorrow!

What's your favourite store for basics?
