5 Minute Makeup Challenge

A few weeks ago Laura tagged me to do the 5 minute makeup challenge. I shy away from application type videos these days as they are not so well received and take much longer to film and edit than your average chatty equivalent but I enjoyed this. I'm pretty sure I've done it before but I can't find it so it must have been waaay in the beginning. Anywho.. here's what I used..

Face
Nars Sheer Glow in Mont Blanc
Benefit Erase Paste in Shade 2
17 Shine Control Pressed Powder
Miners Bronzer/Blusher Blend in Sunblushed

Eyes
MAC Tete-a-tint eyeshadow
MAC Wedge eyeshadow for brows
Rimmel Glam Eyes Liquid Liner
L'Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara
Daniel Sandler Baby Jet Mascara (lower lashes)

Lips
Miners Matte Factor Lip Paint in Peach

Brushes
Eyebrow Brush from QVS at Superdrug
F50 from Sigma (for powder)
F40 from Sigma (for blush)
*Sigma brushes can be bought here, use code GLAM2012 for 10% Discount

And here's the video...

How To Remove Glitter Polish

This is one of those things I'd always heard about but took ages to try and when I did I couldn't believe the results. I'm sure for a lot of you this will be like teaching you to suck eggs.. you've seen it all before, right? Well I would have thought so too as  you're all so beauty minded but when I mentioned it in a recent video I had an overwhelming response to film a tutorial so of course, I did.
If this helps only one poor glitter lover it will have all been worth it!

What you'll need...

Acetone Nail Polish Remover
*acetone free works just not as quickly in my experience*
Tin Foil
Cotton Wool Pads

  • Cut your cotton wool pads into quarters and your tin foil into strips.. you'll need 10 of each.
  • Saturate a cotton quarter and place it on your nail.
  • Wrap your fingertip with foil - don't use too little foil and make sure it's properly covered.
  • Cover all 10 fingers and leave for 5 minutes.
  • To remove wiggle the foil and the cotton pad on your nail and pull the whole thing off, you should be left with a clean, glitter free nail.

The polish that I was wearing was Razzle Dazzle by Deborah Lippmann, I absolutely love this stuff but it's the worst to remove in my collection because the tiny glitter particles act like sand paper to my cotton pad. Nightmare! It was this polish that first drove me to trying this method and I still can't believe how effective it is. I know it's still time consuming but you feel a lot more productive wrapping your finger with foil than you do scrubbing away an entire pack of cotton pads for an hour. I reserve this removal for the more terminally difficult polishes.

It's easy peasy and I'd have thought you could follow this easy step by step but here's a very short video tutorial for you if you'd like to see it in practice...

Here's to many more glitter moments for us all!

Gloss & Glitter

\

I've really rediscovered my love for red lips this Christmas so it seemed only right that I wear them in my Holiday tutorial this year. For my eyes I used a similar technique as I do everyday.. I define just above my crease in an attempt to widen my eyes, classic winged liner and a slick of festive glitter...

What I used for this look...

MAC Paint Pots in Morning Frost and Chilled On Ice
Urban Decay Shadows in Last Call and Smog
2True Easyglide Khol Eyeliner in Black
Rimmel Exhaggerate Liquid Liner in Black
MUA Glitter Eyleliner in 4 (gold)
Loreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara
Daniel Sandler Baby Jet Mascara
MAC Sheertone Blush in Plum Foolery
Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Pencil in Gash
17 Ultimate Volume Lipgloss in Very Berry

To see how I did it watch the video tutorial below...

Iced Island Breeze

I know the title "Island Breeze" totally betrays the season but I've had this palette for the longest time and only just got around to filming a tutorial with it. The colours are lovely pastel shades which unfortunately don't seem to translate well in photos but I think the video picked them up well and I'm really pleased with the overall look. I'm looking forward to winter but that doesn't mean I'm going to give up on the glow just yet.

What I Used

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm
Nars Sheer Glow (Mont Blanc/Light 2)
YSL Touch Eclat (light)
Maybelline SuperStay 24 Concealer (light 2)
Benefit Boxed Powder in Sugar Bomb
Avon Palette in Island Breeze
2True Easyglide Khol Liner
Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara (to give volume)
Urban Decay Skyscraper Mascara (to lengthen)
Urban Decay Lip Junkie in Peroxide

*video will be here once uploaded*

Metallic Smoke

What I Used

17 Wild Metallic Shadows in Wild Silver and Wild Midnight Blue
2True Easyglide Khol Liner
HD Brows Palette in Vamp
Maybelline One by One Mascara (top lashes)
Daniel Sandler Baby Jet Mascara (bottom lashes)
Urban Decay Cream Highlight in Moonshine
Benefit Boxed Powder in Moonshine
MAC lipstick in Angel

I really wanted to do a tutorial with my new Wild Metallic shadows from 17 and it ended up kind of "costumey". In pictures it looks pretty wearable but it was a bit on the garish side for my liking so I would be more likely to whip this out for an upcoming Halloween party than a night out.. you might feel differently.. each to their own. Either way the shadows were pretty good. A little difficult to work with as they don't seem to set so they're not easy to layer and as the evening progressed you might smudge them. They do give a lot of bang for your buck though. I am looking forward to trying some different shades from the range as just between the two I picked up the formula is very different. The Wild Silver is more of a metallic block silver where are the Wild Midnight Blue is a dull, sheer dark blue with lots of glitter. Both look totally different which is a nice contrast but I expected the range to be the same shade to shade. The silver was definitely easier to blend so I'm hoping the neutrals I want to go back for are more like that. Although they do crease without a primer and are prone to sliding around on your eye if you are a glitter-phobe like me these are a great way to achieve that sparkle without the dreaded fall out of a powder shadow.

Halloween Nails

I wanted to try a Halloween nail tutorial so I enlisted my Mum as a hand model. We have an annual Halloween party so I considered it a dry run for next weeks festivities. None of us has decided what to go as yet.. any suggestions are very welcome! Anyway... I saw a picture of Jack-O-Lantern style nails somewhere and was inspired. I wasn't sure how easy it would be so played it safe with crackle glaze over most nails and a statement nail art finger. I think I will try some different styles during the week.. maybe ghosts or witches... hmmm...
The pumpkin pattern was actually really simple to achieve with the nail art pen I have so I think I could be more adventurous with my next try.

What I used..
Models Own polish in Orange Sorbet
Barry M Crackle Nail Paint
Models Own Wahl Nail Art Pen

Let it be known that the extra bit of nail art (on the left)... entirely the models idea! Not that I'm not totally on board but it gives you an insight in to the mind of the woman who raised me and perhaps why I am like I am...

Pretty "First Date" Drugstore Makeup

I've had several requests for a full face of drugstore makeup and a couple for "first date" looks so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. I'm uploading my tutorial to YouTube now but it's a bit blurry (I've had it with trying to film using my SLR) so here are some photos of the look and a run down of the products I used. Hope it's helpful.

I used mostly MUA, their new pro range has some fab stuff. I threw in my new 2true liner as an alternate as I don't have a basic black from MUA and I must say I was impressed. I'll be using that again! I love the overall look but the standout discovery for me has to the mosaic blush. When I first bought it I didn't think much of it, it didn't seem to have an colour pay off when I swatched it and I don't think it ever even made it on to my face. Well... I'm very glad I used it in this tutorial 'cause it's awesome! It gives a really sheer wash of colour and a beautiful sheen, not sparkly at all just glowy, I wish they did a neutral highlight powder in this formula because for £2.50 that would be my number one drugstore product. I have a mosaic bronzer too so I'll be trying that out tomorrow. Just goes to show you should give things another go.. I am often too quick to judge and once something is put away in my collection it could be lost forever.. I would have been seriously missing out.
I also want to point out I used a tiny bit of lipstick with the gloss to create a more tinted lip.. this lipstick is a really bold pink when used normally.

Here's the tutorial video...

What are your favourites from MUA?
