L'Oreal Lumi Magique

I've had this foundation for a few weeks now but I've been too quick to judge in the past and totally changed my mind about products so I wanted to give this one a good run before revealing my thoughts to you all. I've been hooked on my Garnier BB cream for so long but recently wanted to return to a more traditional base. I've struggled to find one that fits (more reviews to come) and my skin type has changed since the last time I was on the 'foundation market' so i made a few poor choices before I arrived at this one. In the meantime I returned to my beloved Nars Sheer Glow. Nars remains the one and only brand to have perfectly colour matched me and I think that clouds my judgement when I'm reviewing them a touch but I do love it. When I first bought this I was hoping it would replace my HG foundation as I don't fancy dropping £29.00 to replace it when I'm out and although this is a very close second.. it's not quite as good! I don't want to get into that now, I'll likely pit them against each other in a future comparison post but for now I want to talk about the Lumi Magique as it's own animal.

First of all.. I really like it! I'm not going to keep you waiting for my verdict, I think it's great! I've tried some not so hot L'Oreal foundations over the past few months and this has totally redeemed them where I'm concerned. It's a light to medium, buildable coverage and it feels like I'm applying a second skin its so lightweight. It doesn't dry too quickly (like the True Match) and leaves a kind of satin finish. They say you will look 'lit from within'.. well I'm not so sure about that but once I'm all made up it does give me a familiar (*cough* Nars) glow.

I don't know why I do this to myself but here's my before and after...Although it's what I consider to be light to medium it's as full coverage as I would want and completely weightless.

I'm not saying that everything about this product is perfect because it's most certainly not.. it has flaws as everything inevitably does. The staying power is.. not good. The photos I took were less than half an hour after application.. by lunchtime unless you are staying indoors and doing absolutely nothing you will feel it's time for a touch up. I do find that improves when I wear my Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (or I suppose any good primer) but then I'm doubling up and increasing the cost, aren't I?  It's has similar lasting power to a tinted moisturiser worn alone but a lot more coverage. If you're looking to upgrade to your first full foundation this might be a good first step.

I've been mixing this with a little of the Infallible which is far too drying (post to come) on me to be worn alone and it does definitely improve the longevity but you lose a little of the 'glow'. I do really like this and as I'm coming off a serious BB cream binge it's the perfect gateway foundation for me right now. It's a lot like my Sheer Glow but unfortunately the one thing I would change in my Nars counterpart is how long it lasts and even that is better than this so I was disappointed. I would still recommend you give it a go if you like a lighter coverage  because at the end of the day we'll probably never find the absolute perfect foundation, will we? So we have to choose what's most important and I'd rather my makeup wear away early than look dry and cakey all day.

Liz Earle - Skin Tint

I received some samples of the Liz Earle Sheer Skin Tint with my last Cleanse & Polish purchase and it's not until today that I really felt inclined to try it out. I so rarely get a pale enough shade in a sample that I generally don't bother but as the folks at Liz Earle had been smart enough to include 3 shades I thought I'd give it a go and I have to say the Bare 01 for fair skin tones is a great match. Here's my before and after...

It gives about as much coverage as my Garnier BB cream, perhaps a touch more. It evens out my skin without looking like I'm wearing a lot of makeup but I still need additional concealer on redness and my under-eyes. The formula was unexpected, I thought it would go on creamy but it's thicker and quicker to dry than I'd imagined. Liz Earle cosmetics do appeal to me given the natural ingredients the brand are known for and that might be a big plus for some consumers, I'd definitely be inclined to try a more natural foundation if I was suffering from frequent breakouts or sensitive skin.

Overall The finish is nice and it has decent lasting power for a sheer face product but it's just not for me. It gives me the same effect that my BB cream does but the texture is distinctly foundation-like, not tinted moisturiser as I imagined it would be! If I'm wearing a full on foundation I like more coverage so this is not going to lead to a purchase but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good light coverage foundation.

Miracle Matte! FACT!

I totally missed the buzz around this new launch.. was there one? I was wandering around Boots at the weekend and spied a big display.. couldn't resist! I haven't trialled many foundations in the past 6 months.. not since I started using BB cream but I'm on a roll now and after the Maybelline foam disappointed me I thought I'd give this a go. Matte is always what I'm aiming to be but I rarely achieve it, I suffer from an oily t-zone and the occasional dry patch so it's tough to find a foundation that suits my combination skin while leaving me shine free.. this ticks all the boxes!If you're looking for something mattifying but non-drying this might just be for you. I didn't even need a powder!

I was also really impressed by their shade range for us paler girls. It's not going to be great for anyone darker than "biscuit" which I know isn't ideal but I can so rarely find a shade pale enough and with 6 colours from the paler side of the spectrum I'm pleased!I think this colour match is better than my beloved NARS mont blanc which is HUGE and definitely has me considering other 17 foundations.

It does need blending well around creases/pores as it will be visible if not. You can see in the photo below.. this is AFTER blending, effort is required and that might not be for everyone!!

That's my one issue with this foundation.

It offers a medium coverage.. I wouldn't want to build on a matte finish. Once dry they don't blend well so if you want something heavy this isn't for you but amazingly this stuff stayed matte ALL DAY! In the house all day with central heating on, getting out with the pushchair to school... not a single sign of shine. I can't tell you how impressed I am.

But the RRP of £5.99 is so affordable for what has instantly become my new favourite matte foundation. The funny thing is I went in to Boots seriously considering treating myself the new Chanel Perfection Lumiere (£36 here) but they couldn't match me, ha!

Maybelline Airfoam Foundation

When I saw the press release for this a couple of months ago I couldn't wait for it's UK launch to get my hands on it. I've been a long time love of Maybelline's Dream foundation range and am yet to find a version I don't like so I had high hopes for this new formula. Although it's a refreshing change of pace mousse/foam foundation isn't a totally new concept. It was popular in 90s, Elizabeth Arden's version has remained in their permanent line ever since and Revlon have recently launched an aerated version of their popular photoready in US so I'm sure we will see lots of brands having a go at something similar this year.

The first thing I'd like to clarify here is that I don't think this is going to be for everyone! Normal to oily skins will be fine but the formula is thin and quick to set so drier skin types might not get on with it. It will cling to dry patches making them appear worse. Extra oily skin might struggle too. The application is nice, it spreads nicely and I got an even matte finish, The coverage is a lot like that of a tinted moisturiser, very light but this is buildable and doesn't look the least bit cakey when layered on. It lasts as well as any other dream formula I've tried.. I would need to reapply for the evening but it will be fine for a days work.

My only real issue with this foundation is how difficult it is to colour match. The foam comes out as quickly as you'd expect - just the same as a hair mousse - so you get way more than you need if you're just swatching which means you can't swatch that many shades in store unless your armed with a packet of babywipes.. and even then it's just so wasteful! The shade I went for ended up way too dark on me and looking online I'm not sure they will have one light enough for my skin tone (NARS Mont Blanc FYI) so that's a big disappointment.

Despite my misgivings if you have normal skin with no more than an oily t-zone I would recommend you give this a go. If the colour match was good I'd have been really happy with this product but it was comically dark and the tester didn't appear that way.. I mean look at the pictures... I'm not crazy.. that's clearly not my shade! If I can find the right one for me it could just be my favourite foundation, it has the potential to build to a true airbrushed finish without all of the tricky machinery usually required to achieve it.

New face of MAC

Studio Sculpt Foundation £23.00

I was given a sample of this foundation to try about a year ago and I loved it. I really liked my Studio Fix but it broke me out after using for only a week. When I questioned the MAC MUA she recommended I try Studio Sculpt for a medium to full coverage that wouldn't be too heavy for my skin. It's a gel-based formula and unlike anything else I have. It feels so strange on application, it doesn't blend all that easily but the finish is worth the extra effort. The first time I tried it it was midday before I realised i had forgotten to put on powder and I wasn't oily at all, really great for my combination skin. It lasted the whole day and felt weightless, I haven't been wearing it long enough to say whether it will break me out yet but I really don't think it will. It's so light, I don't see how it could. 

Now the concealer... that was an impulse purchase. I knew I wanted to get the foundation and it just came out... "and I'll take the concealer too" ... this may have been a mistake! It's a very different texture. Somewhere between Benefits Boi-ing and Erase Paste. It's very thick so for those wanting a high coverage concealer it is great but it's a little chalky. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a cream to powder but it feels that way. I haven't discovered a way to apply it lightly yet so it's too cakey for underneath my eyes but I think it will be ideal for covering redness and blemishes. My skin has been fab (touch wood) in recent months but I'm sure it will find a way back to  to how it was and this will come in handy then.

MAC - Most Wanted

Last week I was desperate to get my hands on some of the new Glitter and Ice collection from MAC but since I had to put off my shopping trip I've decided my money may be better spent elsewhere...

Now OBVIOUSLY I'm not about to run out and get all this in one trip but this is my fantasy shopping list I'll keep handy when I next visit my local counter. I have wanted to try Studio Sculpt Foundation/Concealer since I bought the Studio Fix Fluid and it broke me out. I loved the coverage and the finish but I couldn't live with what it did to my skin. Apparently the Studio Sculpt is a lighter alternative as it's gel-based and hydrating so shouldn't have the same, ugly effect but does offer buildable-full coverage and a nice finish. 

The eye shadows are just more must haves I'm told I "need" by bloggers far and wide and the brow set I will need to try before I buy. My brows are light and sparse, I'd love to find a quick way to groom them in the mornings but as yet nothing looks as natural as a powder which takes some time and requires a palette and brushes.. I would be over the moon if MACs brow set did the job in one swipe but I'm not holding out much hope. I want a pro palette quad because it's handier than the 15 palettes I have and I feel like I am more likely to rotate the shades and get more use out of what I have. Because I'm a palette fiend I'd likely buy quarry and humid in refill form. Lastly, Groundwork - I haven't found a paint pot I really love for daily use yet but this seems a light enough neutral taupe brown to be worn every day and the lip glass is the gloss version of my go to MAC lipstick so I must have it, right?

Lots of people have complained this is difficult to blend but it's perfect as far as I'm concerned I don't have to do my face in sections as I've heard some have, I can do my whole face in one go and it blends fine.
Finish?
Flawless and matte. This is a heavy duty foundation, it doesn't feel like you're wearing a mask of makeup but it can look like you are. This will cover any imperfections, I don't need any extra concealer when I wear it but it's not going to be for everyone. Perfect coverage and finish for a night out.
How long does it last?
Until you take it off... best long lasting foundation I've ever tried

It lasted nicely but the beauty of this product is that it's handbag handy with the built in sponge for touch ups throughout the day

Terribly, it dries instantly so it's impossible to move anywhere, I've tried applying this with a brush, a wet makeup sponge.. nothing makes this work, You would have to have the oiliest skin in the world for this to blend and even then I'm not convinced it would.

Hard to say as I didn't get one good coverage from it but if you can I'd say it would be perfectly matte, just unfortunate that I couldn't

On me this really is an airbrush finish. It's buildable to a heavier coverage but I would still use an additional concealer as the coverage doesn't hold up so well throughout the day.
How long does it last?
As mentioned, Lasts past lunch but not quite to home time.. I find it difficult to chastise it for that though because I spent so much more on the Nars Sheer Glow and this is far superior where longevity is concerned
Shade range?
8, not the best maybelline offers but as it's a blendable liquid formula you could purchase 2 shades to create a custom colour match..I wouldn't rule it out!
Would I repurchase?
Yes

The reason I chose the Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid as the winner is this..
There are others that I love but this one is more universal. I believe this will work on most skin types, the shade range allows a good scope for skin tones and it hasn't broken me out whether I'm dry/oily.
I ask a lot from my perfect foundation, I want a light coverage but I want to look flawless, I want time to blend but I want it to set, I want to look dewy but not shiny. This foundation does not exist! I've learned instead that you find a great base, a great concealer and a great powder and together they give you the finish you want. This is a good all rounder, not too heavy not too light, drugstore prices and their are plenty of shades available. Of all of the foundations I've tried this is the one I could recommend to anyone.

*A note on the winning foundation...
I think that the satin liquid and the creamy compact are pretty much the same product in two different formats. I used them at the same time in the same shade. I applied the liquid at home in the morning and kept the compact in my bag for any touch ups. The compact is a solid to liquid foundation so I believe it's the same formula put into more handy packaging.. for anyone that's interested!

Garnier BB Cream - Review

Garnier's BB Cream is finally here. This hugely hyped product dubbed a "Miracle Skin Perfector" was one new launch I couldn't wait to get my hands on and now I have it I just had to share my first thoughts with you. I have seen surprisingly few reviews and posts about this given the buzz surrounding it so I couldn't get a real idea of how well it worked or what it did. Hopefully for those of you looking for just that.. this will help!

Firstly There are 2 shades available, Light and Medium. It retails at £9.99 and sold out and can be bought at Superdrug and Boots. The original BB cream was created in Germany but the craze really started in Asia where it was said to be the secret to Korean actresses beautiful skin. It soon became popular here to buy online and there was much talk on YouTube about these mystical creams for months before Garnier launched the first drugstore version. BB stands for Blemish Balm, there have been many variations made, some are said to have skin lightening properties, some are anti-wrinkle, some anti-acne. What Garnier are claiming to offer is a sun block and moisturiser that evens skin tone, boosts glow, blurs imperfections and smooths fine lines all in one wonderful tube. Ok so enough of what it's supposed to do... here you can see the balm in action. Please excuse my early morning makeup free face.

This is JUST the balm on my face, no concealer, nothing! I am really impressed with the coverage. I'm not sure it even is coverage. It's almost like it really is blurring imperfections, evening out skintone and boosting glow. It feels weightless and moisturising when on the skin but it doesn't leave me uber shiny like a tinted moisturiser would. I can explain it but I'm excited.

It's a much thicker consistency than any of the compared products as you can see.. you might think that as a result it's more moisturising and spreads further but I didn't find this to be the case. I used this as an all-in-one so applied it to my clean face, no moisturiser/primer. I found it to be quick drying, it spreads like an oil free moisturiser so I needed more than I'd expected to cover my face and blend in to my neck. This being said I liked the coverage that it gave and it is buildable because of it's thicker formula so it's not all bad. I did get shiny in my t-zone/chin area by lunchtime but no more so than with any other product (except revlon colorstay) But I used a little powder to mattify and the coverage lasted me until I wanted to remove my makeup. I was impressed given that I was expecting little more than a tinted moisturiser.

I will do a more in depth follow-up review when I've used this exclusively for a few weeks so that I can really see whether it's made any improvement on my skin condition. I'd love to think that it will and isn't JUST a cosmetic product. Whether I repurchase this will really depend how long this little tube lasts me. £9.99 is more than I'd like to spend for what is quite a small amount of product (It's just 50ml).. but I'll see how it goes, if it offers real benefits to my skin it would be worth the cash for sure.

Outlet Shopping Haul

On this glorious Bank Holiday Friday I took a trip to York Designer Outlet..

I thought I would share with you some of the bargains I picked up.

First up, I've been lusting after a Bobbi Brown Custom Palette for a while but it's expensive stuff.. not at the CCO though :) This 3 pan eyeshadow palette was just £25 and the single eyeshadow and lipgloss quad were around £10 each. It's all interchangeable so as you can see I switched them up to create a more useful combination for my on the go makeup bag!

 I was soooo excited to find the foundation compact, this is no longer in production and they still had a lot of shade options, next time I go I will definitely pick up a spare for when I run out and I will use it VERY sparingly, only when I'm out and about - such a handy product! I got the shade "porcelain"

This is again discontinued I'm afraid, they do full pan lipsticks.glosses too I think I will pick one up next time.

You can then use the individual cases interchangeably too.. the description stickers are on the bottom of the pop out pans and the palettes have square spaces in the bottom (difficult to describe) so you can switch and change as you like and everything is just as useable as ever!

Next up is a HUGE bargain from Ted Baker. I've been lusting after the Louis Vuitton Neverfull again but as always I just can't come to terms with £465 for one bag so I've been on the hunt for a really great quality highstreet one.. I have LOVED Ted Baker for some time and last time I was there I picked up a purple patent purse that I have cherished.. when I saw this I knew I had to have it. Purple is of course my favourite colour but it also has the copper coloured shiny hardware and it's real leather so will wear nicely too!

You can expect some oot posts featuring some better pics of this gem very soon! Full price it was £125, it was on sale at £85... I still didn't really want to part with that cash but it was a beautiful bag... there were a couple of tiny scuffs and so Lee bartered the saleman down to £60.. yay! Less than HALF PRICE! Absolute bargain and it will be my summer arm candy for sure :)

I have already made a date will Lee to go back very soon.. maybe next month as I had my eye on these beauties from Kurt Geiger and I think I need them! 

I love them in both colours but I think I prefer the white/cream.. what do you think?

I've looked them up on the website since and they are full price stock online £85 but at the outlet they were just £49... must haves I think!

Revlon Colorstay - Where've you been all my life?

I know I'm soooo late to the party here but I am absolutely OBSESSED with Revlon Colorstay! I can't tell you how pleased I am to have discovered this amazing foundation that 100% knocks my NARS Sheer Glow out of the water and it's a fraction of the cost. The coverage is absolutely unparalleled for me, it's buildable to double as concealer, it really DOES last all day AND it comes in combination/oily which prevents the breakouts that usually come with a heavy, long lasting coverage. It's just unbeatable... in fact I wont be looking any further. I no longer need to try the latest ANYTHING! I've found my ultimate, holy grail foundation end of story.

I should probably also mention for all you oily prone girls like me that although it doesn't keep me matte ALL day it leaves me with a glow at worst. Who else LOVES this like I do?
