Where's The LOVE?

When I started out on YouTube and in blogging I had no idea about the beauty community but was pleasantly surprised to discover a whole world of support online from people who had never met each other but had a common interest. I was less thrilled to find the hateful forums where the people who dislike you go to trash you. When anyone asks my advice about starting a channel or a blog the first thing that pops in to my head is hate. It's not something that everyone is equipped to deal with, in my opinion, and to be honest I'm probably someone that falls in to that category but by the time I had my first experience with trolls I was already fairly invested. The worst mistake I made was revealing too much, I talk about everything! Unfortunately when you let people in to your life like that they feel they have the right to judge the way you live.. and maybe they do.

Vlog channels especially are like reality TV and people talk about them like the person filming isn't real.. much the way as we all do with the Kardashian clan and Big Brother contestants. We're all guilty of hate on some level whether it be tweeting something snarky about a celebrity or gossiping about your work colleagues.. you just don't see it when you're doing it yourself.

So I say we leave the forums and gossipers to do their own thing.. if that's what they need then let them have it. I for one feel wretched whenever I slip up and open the page but I only have myself to blame.. I went looking for it, it didn't come looking for me. While they stay in their pen it's fine but when they come out and directly attack you.. that's something else entirely and dependant on the content of the message, it could be illegal! I personally have got a little click happy when it comes to blocking people these days but I've done my time letting them upset me. People can dislike me all they want but once they send me a personal message or leave a comment on a video or blog post they've crossed a line. They can no longer claim to be unaware of the effect their words are having, quite the opposite, they are intending to cause distress. I'm not some kind of internet terrorist you can't escape from.. I upload videos that you can watch.. if you want. I'm pretty sure I don't get paid enough to deal with that s*t but dya know what? I do get paid and that's the problem.

These are people that don't make videos and hate the people that do and can get paid for it. A common comment I get is that since I became a YouTube partner I churn out videos like they're going out of fashion. Now I do make a lot of videos, that's true but I always have! From starting my channel it took my 5 months to be accepted as a partner and in that time I made over 100 videos. Most of the people that leave me these comments weren't watching me before I was a partner so it's a great example of 'haters gonna hate'. A lot of the time there's no sense to it but it's their hobby. Unfortunately for them there's no money to be made in it whereas my hobby could prove to be quite lucrative down the line and they can't stand that.

So it would seem there's very little love left online - I personally think eHarmony took it all - but the love that is left is so much more appreciated as a result. We have probably all had moments when we should have chosen our words more carefully but there will always be those people that love to hate. I would tell you to ignore them but I know that's hard, just remember the irony, they're still watching.. they're always watching!

  1. I've seen some of the things people have written on your videos and they really make me annoyed on your behalf, darn trolls x

  2. I honestly don't understand what would compel a person to write something horrible on someone's channel, blog or anything really. They must be a very sad person with far too much time on their hands. So far I've only had 1 or 2 nasty things said, and whilst it hurts I can't help but think "I still have the upper hand because you just increased my views... Sucks to be you!!" Either that or I drown my sorrows in a vat of wine. Lx

  3. On the one hand, I do think the people on the forums should put their time and effort into something more constructive- perhaps telling the people they DO like how much they appreciate them, or anything else. But on the other hand (and I don't think you fall in to this category), if someone is being dishonest in their videos and maybe they have their comments on approval, of they simply delete anything which is slightly negative, then it's good for people to be able vent about that. When it crosses over to malicious hate however, people need to take a step back and and ask themselves why somebody who makes videos about makeup is so disruptive to their life that they have to dedicate their time to being a bitch about them!

  4. Great post! The funniest thing that these 'trolls' probably forget is that when they're clicking on your videos, blog posts etc., they're actually adding to your pocket- so the jokes on them!

  5. Its awful isn't it the amount of people out there that spend their time and energy hating on another person. If I don't like someone or something, I just switch off. Its a lot easier than wasting energy in writing a hateful comment. I agree there is so much support in the beauty community its overwhelming but regardless there will always be these narrow minded individuals that feel it is acceptable to post hate messages to a stranger on the internet. I agree with Smaz above all the time they are watching, commenting etc they are only doing you a favour. I do believe that a majority of it stems from jealousy. I do however agree that people are entitled to have an opinion yet it is differentiating an opinionated comment from a pure hateful comment which people seem to find hard to establish. My only advice to anyone is think before you post, is it something you would be happy to hear? If not turn off and go away.

  8. I love your blog and videos and I love that you are posting and uploading regularly. People should be grateful for all the hard work that you and a lot of other bloggers and YouTubers put in to it... But some people have a natural ability to whinge, I'd call it jealousy... And if ever people are jealous of you, I guess it's kind of a compliment in a way ;)
