Goodbye Friend

Only a couple of months ago I was giddy with glee to get my hands on an an iPad 2.. today it left my house and in it's a place.. a wad of cash. This has left me with mixed emotions. I'll admit when I bought the gadget I regretted the purchase immediately, it was huge chunk of cash to part with for something that didn't seem to really add anything to my life. It doesn't replace a laptop because there's so much you can't do with it and as I bought it wi-fi only I couldn't use it out of the house so... what was the point? I use my laptop for the majority of my web browsing, blogging etc etc so the iPad became a glorified games console for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved it... but it was a very expensive way to play with apps. I was really hoping the movie editing software and camera quality would be a YouTube game changer but it was no better than my iPhone4. At the end of the day it's a nice to have but definitely not a need to have. I lost £150 on it in those few months of ownership which is pretty painful 'cause for that cash I could have bought a brand new DS which would have been just as useful (plus I'd still have it)
Anyway... the sale of the tablet has come at a bit of a bad tech-time for me. My Sony Vaio laptop is driving me nuts... today we've had to restore it to factory settings just to get it to function on a basic level. I have the cash from the sale of the iPad, I have some more money coming in at the end of the month and I would just DIE to finally upgrade to a MacBook Pro... so that's the plan. I know it's expensive but I've spent more than that on laptops in the last 2 years and if they really last as long as everyone says then it will work out cheaper than replacing my sony with another windows machine. I have wanted a mac for the longest time which is a huge part of why I bought the iPad in the first place.. it was a poor mans macbook that never really lived up to my expectations. I would love to hear from you guys that use macs.. I only ever hear good things but I value your opinions.. are they really THAT much better than a PC? I'm hoping to trade up in the next few weeks so leave me your comments! Is it really worth £999?

  1. Bought my macbook 3 years ago and (touch wood) have never had any problems with it and its still going strong. At first when i bought m macbook i regretted it as i wasn't used to the different layout but after a day or two i fell in love. i would never go back to a windows after owning a mac. Also ive been told they are less viruses made for macs so the chance of picking up a virus on a mac is less than on a windows. i think they are definitely worth the money after 3 years and lots of music etc stored on my hard drive my macbook is still fast, even faster than some of my friends newer windows laptops. hope you enjoy your mac if you get one :D

  2. Definitely worth the money. I've had my Mac for 4 years and I would never ever ever get a windows laptop again. I cant even imagine how long a 4 year old windows laptop would take just to start up. I have zero patience with windows because its so so slow compared to Mac! Its a very worthwhile investment and with all your blogging and videos you will get so much use out of it. If I ever have that guilty feeling about buying something expensive I try and think of the cost per use. So say if you used your Mac everyday for a year that works out at something like £2.64 a day! And my Mac has been going for 4 years with pretty much everyday use. I know its a lot of money in one go but its something youre gona get so much use from. Buy buy buy! ;) Laura xx

  3. To put it simply: Yes. They're really THAT much better.
I always heard people say that once you switch to Mac you'd never go back and it's absolutely true. My MacBook is still just as fast as when I bought it almost two years ago despite being crammed with thousands of photos, the whole Adobe creative suite and the Sims3 with five game extensions (the latter of which alone caused my not-so-old Acer to despair).
The single best thing about Apple though is their service, so if you decide to get one definitely get an extended warranty. I haven't had a lot of trouble with it, but with the regular Macbooks (not Pro) there are some issues with the bottom coming loose and I've also had some cracks in the top lid and fraying in the power cable. Not ONCE has anyone even implied that I may have been mishandling it (which is the first response you'd get anywhere else that sells computers) - they fixed it there and then, or replaced a part and I was on my way within 20 or so minutes.
Apple Care is the single best thing ever invented and I'll be looking to upgrade to a Macbook Pro as soon as I can get some money on my hands.

  4. I got my Macbook 4 years ago and still love it. I haven't had any major problems with it, no viruses and still as fast as when I got it. I felt sick at the thought of how much money I'd spent when I bought it but I've never regretted it.

About a year ago it kept freezing on me, when I took it to Apple they replaced my hard drive no question. I had my Macbook back in 4 days and they didn't even charge me, I love their customer service.

I couldn't use windows again, my mums 2 year old Windows laptop is done. It takes 10 minutes just to start up, I'd have thrown it out the window long ago.

  5. I've been using a Mac for 10 years. My 7 year old desktop died last November and I haven't replaced it because I also had a 13 inch Macbook (bought in 2009). It has the most up to date software on it and works like a dream.

You can buy the Mac mini version which costs about £500 (its the hard drive only) so you'd need a Screen which you can get for about £150. It might be a cheaper way to go with Apple. I don't have one of these but if my Macbook was to die I'd probably get one because I can't afford £1,000 on a Macbook replacement right now.

Here's a link to the Apple store UK for the Mac Mini. Check out the specs and no I don't work for Apple:

    Good luck,

  7. My mac is nearly ten year old. Nothing has ever been fixed on it. It has NEVER crashed and lost my work. It has honestly never had a single problem. It doesnt even look old and it is future proof (within reason obviously).

I had a pc a year or so ago (someone gave me it thinking that macs dont let you do windows stuff and I would need it for uni, obz not true at all) and it broke after a month. It kept crashing and had loads of viruses etc. It was honestly a disgrace.

It really is an investment so go for it.

  8. I have a white MacBook which i bought for £699 in October 2008. At the time, i thought £699 was crazy money to part with for a computer.. I mean, laptops aren't meant to have the longest life because they're laptops etc etc.
Apple products are dear, i admit that but they're SO good. I've had my laptop 3 years now and i still love it. It has had a few chips in the plastic but because of my model of laptop, Apple fixed them for free. They also re-installed the operating system onto it at one point as it died and they done that for free. Apple are definitely a good company in the sense of their costumer service and longevity of their products.
Once you get a Mac, you'll wonder what you ever done without one. Take the plunge, you won't regret it! And Mac's do generally hold their value very well :-) xx

  9. hmmm my bf is a computer obsessive, he built his own and really doesnt rate apple at all, you pay alot of money for the brand and not the actual components... but i suppose it depends if you have the knowledge to know what you are looking for or how to build your own etc... i let him deal with all that hehe :D
